what flat roof should i choose

what are the difference in flat roofing technologies i hear a lot of people ask. is there a superior system. what is the difference between single ply epdm and single ply pt or pte.  the difference between torch on built up systems and asphalt mastic.  Is Fibreglass roof  better than felt  etc.

Well lets start at the beginning, there is a lot of stigma around flat roofs and people think they are problematic.  Flat roofing technologies have come a long way since the early days when we used to come round  with a hot pot (bitumen boiler) with a pour and roll system.

A good flat roof is usually in the design of the roof and one that drains water quickly is going to have a longer life span than one that has areas of pooling say near a scupper outlet  or behind skylights were poor thought in the initial design process on removing water from behind the windows has not been taken into consideration etc or in a full parapet wall design.

The other contributing factor is the contractor.  There are many flat roofs being fitted on domestic property's that are not being  fitted correctly ie to the manufacturers specifications.  I have seen many a felt flat roof laid with out continuous bleeds or separate up stands to the perimeter edges  and to the untrained eye they would look completely normal.

This is why it is important to choose a contractor that is approved or licensed by the manufacturer as they are trained to fit the product exactly how it should be installed.  This alone will increase the lifespan of a flatroof.

There is no superior solutions from one to the other however certain systems may be better suited for the use etc say a balcony for instance is more suited to Asphalt or fibreglass or a liquid roof due to foot traffic and its hard wearing qualities as to say a singleply system would be .
